It’s Bandcamp Friday on March 5 and there are 4 new releases for you to check out.
Jon Raskin has been a member of Rova Saxophone Quartet for the last 42 years exploring the relationship of improvisation and composition, developing and honing the language of ensemble music and researching linguistic possibilities of the saxophone along with a host of known and unknown instruments.
Hotel Noctambulo is a real place. In fact it is many real places that previously when we sometimes occupied ourselves as touring musicians we would have spent many nights there. But don’t let that bother you and don’t lose any sleep over it. Most of the titles for these improvised pieces were culled from Thomas Pynchon’s novel Against The Day but are in no way meant to illustrate or indicate anything within or without that novel.
Book ‘W’ of “Practitioners” performed by Jon Raskin on alto saxophone. Steve Lacy composed three books of etudes and only released the first of volume, Book ‘H’. As he described them: “These pieces were written (83) for my own use, as exercises and studies for the saxophone. Deliberately made, so as to be hard to play, they also contain many of the characteristic ‘licks’, which comprise the language that I use, in the different kinds of improvisational music, that I perform in. Each piece is also a portrait of, and an homage to, a distinguished practitioner of a particular art….”. The last book is Book ‘P’ and is performed on the baritone and will be releases shortly.
