A Song of Greenwood is a fictional musical built upon the events surrounding the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. It incorporates several characters inspired by key historic figures and a well-researched, accurate timeline of events which has been interwoven into a human-level story of forbidden love, generational conflicts, family dynamics and interpersonal, interracial relationships.
A Song of Greenwood is being rewritten as an 8-episode limited musical series for screen. This exciting restructuring builds upon our centennial rewrite which was completed just as the COVID crises hit the live theatre industry.
We moved quickly to shift gears from stage to screen, more than doubling the length and scope of the story. A major new storyline has been added (inspired by the historical figure of A. J. Smitherman, editor of the Tulsa Star newspaper at the time of the Massacre.) Many of the beloved, well-established characters have been deepened and expanded as well, along with new songs and arrangements.
