Finnish kantele virtuoso Ritva Koistinen and master Malian balafon musician Fodé Lassana Diabaté each play solo sets to launch an afternoon of concerts in the Joe Henderson Lab, in the third day of Kronos Festival 2016: Explorer Series.

Koistinen, part of a celebrated family of kantele (plucked zither) musicians and luthiers, has been an active proponent of Finland’s national instrument in contemporary concert music. As Toronto’s Globe and Mail has observed, “Koistinen’s hands conjured pure enchantment, from top notes that glittered like cold starlight to bass notes that throbbed with the pulse of an ancient forest.” Diabaté is from a long and distinguished line of griot musicians, trained in Mali in the centuries-old balafon (22-key xylophone) tradition. He is a member of the Malian group Trio Da Kali, has performed and recorded with many stars of music in Mali, such as Toumani Diabaté, Salif Keita, Babani Koné and Bassekou Kouyaté, and was a member of the Grammy-nominated Mali-Cuba collaboration, Afrocubism.
