“The film has both the ambition and a sufficient amount of breathtaking cinematography to make even the boldest claims it makes for itself seem valid … a brilliantly rendered, giddily self-referential satire of contemporary American culture.”
— The Guardian

Matthew Barney and co-director Jonathan Bepler reimagine Norman Mailer as a soul who reincarnates three times in three different bodies, enduring the seven mythological states. With a libretto featuring text from Mailer’s 1983 novel Ancient Evenings, Barney also references Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William S. Burroughs, offering a confluence of meditations on the timeless concerns of mortality and regeneration. The images, as one would expect from the creator of THE CREMASTER CYCLE, are shocking and inspiring, Bepler’s music intricate and haunting, and the actors (including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Paul Giamatti and Ellen Burstyn) are game for the adventure.
