Concert 1 Highlights
Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. Wagner composed this “symphonic birthday greeting” as a birthday gift for his wife, Cosima, and to honor the birth of their son, Siegfried.
The piece was originally scored for an ensemble small enough to fit on Wagner’s staircase, where the piece was premiered.
On December 25, 1870, Cosima awoke to the sound of the ensemble playing this piece (cool alarm clock).
The trumpet part is just 12 measures long. Conductor Hans Richter led the premiere, and also learned how to play the trumpet just to play these 12 bars with the ensemble.
