When Julian Lage first emerged on the music scene, the young San Francisco Bay Area-based musician was not only deemed a guitar-playing prodigy, but he was also offered record deals on numerous occasions. Lage played a unique style that melded blues, classical, folk and jazz influences. He became a sideman with established instrumentalists like Gary Burton and to collaborate with contemporaries such as guitarist Nels Cline, pianist Taylor Eigsti and violinist Mark O’Connor. Along the way, Lage received recognition from musical luminaries, including Herbie Hancock and Béla Fleck.

Craig Taborn: Composer/Pianist/Electronic Musician Craig Taborn was born and raised in Golden Valley, Minnesota. While studying at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Craig had the good fortune to work in the illustrious Detroit jazz community performing and studying with such luminaries as Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney, Kenn Cox, and Francisco Mora Catlett.

“Taborn’s penchant for sustaining creative fluency through a 360-degree span of stylistic taxonomies, in contexts “inside” and “outside”, acoustic or electronic, makes him a singular figure among improvisers of his generation”
— Downbeat Magazine

He has worked with Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Holland, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Tim Berne, Evan Parker, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, David Torn, Chris Potter, Nicole Mitchell, and Carl Craig among others.

Taborn currently creates work for both solo piano and solo electronics as well as composing for larger ensembles.

He is a Doris Duke Artist, a Civitella Ranieri fellow, a Shifting Foundation fellow and currently records for ECM Records. He lives in Brooklyn.

Kris Davis: Pianist and composer Kris Davis has blossomed as one of the singular talents on the New York jazz scene, a resolutely individual artist who offers “uncommon creative adventure,” according to Jazz Times.

To date, Davis has released nine recordings as leader, with her tenth, Duopoly, to be released in 2016. These records include two solo piano albums: Massive Threads and Aeriol Piano; An octet project, Infrasound: Save Your Breath, two trio albums: Waiting For You To Grow and Good Citizen; a quintet project: Capricorn Climber; and three quartet recordings: Rye Eclipse, The Slightest Shift and Lifespan. These albums can be found on the ‘Best of’ lists in the New York Times, Downbeat, Jazztimes, NPR and the Jazz Record. As a collaborator, Davis is known for her ongoing work with the trio Paradoxical Frog with drummer Tyshawn Sorey and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and as the arranger for saxophonist Tony Malaby’s nonet project Novela. Davis was selected by Downbeat as one of 25 artists to watch of 2016. She received a Doris Duke Impact award in 2015 and multiple commissions to compose new works from the Shifting Foundation, The Jazz Gallery/Jerome Foundation and the Canada Council for the Art.

The Angel City Jazz Festival – LA’s only non-commercial jazz and new music festival – was founded in 2008 by music promoter Rocco Somazzi. From 2009, Cryptogramophone’s founder Jeff Gauthier became a festival coproducer and the festival moved to the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. Since then the festival has grown into an essential multi day celebration of cutting edge Jazz at some of the most exciting & prestigious venues in LA, such as LACMA, REDCAT, Zipper Hall, the Blue Whale, the Moss Theatre and The Edye by the Broad Stage.

The 2016 festival is presented by Angel CIty Arts, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating and revitalizing jazz culture in Los Angeles by producing concerts by established and emerging music innovators who have achieved exceptionally high levels of musicianship and brought forward a significant contribution to the evolution of jazz and improvised music.

The Angel City Jazz Festival consistently features the most innovative and original national and international jazz musicians working today, balancing established jazz artists with emerging talent, and focusing on west coast creative jazz, past, present and future.
