Join us for a fascinating evening exploring the life and music (so far) of Oswaldo Golijov. Born in Argentina in 1965, his powerful, multilayered music draws from diverse contemporary influences such as klezmer, jazz, and tango. The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind was Golijov’s first major success, a musical expression—reflecting joy and sorrow, laughter and tears—of a mystical Jewish belief. The piece deftly blends prayer and dance and leaves the listener in a state of grace that is all too rare in modern music.

Golijov’s works move brilliantly beyond collage to grab the ears with palpable force. They may also reflect the coming of age of a broader global sensibility within the secluded world of classical composition, and they suggest that the freshest voices may be hailing from the most distant shores.
