Ten years since Marcus Shelby found inspiration in a recent Harriet Tubman biography and created his critically-acclaimed jazz oratorio, Bound for the Promised Land, the bassist and Bay Area bandleader reignites Tubman’s mission with a thrilling collaboration, highlighting the Negro Spirituals that served as coded messages to runaway slaves. With special guests from the Lyric Performing Arts Academy, the Marcus Shelby Orchestra celebrates the stunning musical stories of the Underground Railroad, and honors the memory of one of history’s most important champions of freedom: Harriet Tubman. Join us for this very special Black History Month Family Matinee!
