Two great soloists: Scott Looney improvising on the piano and Elliot Simpson on guitar playing pieces by Alvin Lucier, Walter Zimmerman and James Tenney.

Elliot Simpson, visiting from The Hague, does just about everything with a guitar. His repertoire ranges from early music, through modern classics and works by emerging composers including Hugo Morales, Ezequiel Menalled, Benjamin Staern and Sahba Aminikia to free improvisation, and he plays most instruments that might be thought of as a guitar, from the standard nylon-strung classical guitar, to the just intonation resonator guitar favored by Lou Harrison. At this show he will be performing compositions from the experimental end of the spectrum by James Tenney, Alvin Lucier and Walter Zimmerman.

We’re lucky that Scott R. Looney agreed to appear at Tom’s Place. We love his piano playing, which we don’t get to hear often enough. Scott concentrates on expanding the timbral possibilities of the piano, plucking strings, using metal implements and other quick preparations, in combination to playing the piano normally.

“This guy deserves your attention. He’s got power, emotional heft, but also an abundance of musical intelligence and subtlety.”
— Ken Waxman, Cadence
