Join one of the leading sitarists in the country Paul Livingstone, cello virtuoso Peter Jacobson, saxophonist Eric Barber, and percussionist Dave Lewis for Arohi Ensemble: blending Indian ragas, jazz, counterpoint and rhythmic material from diverse world traditions.

Paul Livingstone — sitar

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, international performing artist Paul Livingstone is one of the leading sitarists in America today. He has focused his studies in the creative tradition of Indian classical raga music in which he has been rigorously trained for the past 25 years in India and the US studying under the late Amiya Dasgupta, Rajeev Taranath and the living legend Pandit Ravi Shankar.Paul has performed in around the US, Mexico, Europe & Asia and has just returned from a major concert tour performing Indian music in Nepal, India, Czech & Germany.

As a committed composer Paul leads his own Arohi Ensemble and has composed for film, television, theater and dance. He also plays a variety of fretless guitars and requintos of his own design and has also developed a unique style of ‘ragajazz chamber music’ blending Indian ragas, jazz, counterpoint & rhythmic material from diverse world traditions. As a creative force for true ‘world music synthesis’, Paul maintains a clear vision for the dissemination of traditional forms and is grounded in the rich cultural milieu of Los Angeles as a dedicated teaching artist & community activist.

Paul has performed in setting as a sitar soloist with Symphony & Choral to ragajazz, pop & rock contexts, in major festivals and venues such as the Hollywood Bowl…

Peter Jacobson — cello

A cellist, producer, songwriter-singer, chamber musician, teacher and music selector who has recorded, performed and toured with renowned artists. He studied with Eleonore Schoenfeld at USC as well as at Cal Arts and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2013 he won a Grammy for best Latin Rock Alternative or Urban Album as a member of the group Quetzal. Mr. Jacobson has recorded cello for Dr. Dre and frequently plays alongside the San Diego Symphony. Pete has recorded for film and tv, including The Walking Dead. In 2000 he was a member of the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan and has performed in the US, Mexico, Asia, Australia the Midlle East and Europe. He plays with Grammy winning Southwest Chamber Music, the Arohi Ensemble, the 440’s, SANGAM, ThE CoNcEnTr8s, Quartetto Fantastico, the Hutchins Consort and as a freelance cellist.

Eric Barber — saxophone

Recognized as part of a generation of artists whose artistic voice and output defy categorization. Barber has developed a unique approach to the saxophone, integrating influences from jazz, Balkan and Indian music with a personal vocabulary of extended saxophone techniques.

His versatility, unique approach to the saxophone and artistic fearlessness have made him a regular collaborator with some of the most innovative and unconventional figures in new music today, including Nels Cline, Mark Dresser, Vinny Golia, Wayne Horvitz, Art Jarvinen, Steuart Liebig, Poovalur Srinivasan, Wadada Leo Smith, Miroslav Tadic, Tom Varner, and Glen Velez. Eric grew up in Eugene and majored in music at the University of Oregon. He moved in 1997 to attend graduate school at California Institute of the Arts, and immediately became immersed in the thriving Los Angeles jazz and world music scenes.

Dave Lewis — percussion

Easily one of the most exciting drumming talents in the world today. Born in 1983, Lewis grew up playing piano and began composing at the age of 8. By twelve, he was given his first drum set and never looked back. Influenced by jazz, latin, rock and East Indian classical music, Lewis‘s ingenuity took him well beyond his years. He received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in December of 2005. A solid, articulate and dynamic musician, Lewis has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Vince Neil (Motley Crue) Robby Kreiger (The Doors) George Thorogood, Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Joe Lovano, Sheila E., Deepak Ram, Kai Eckhardt, Taufiq Qureshi, George Brooks, Arohi Ensemble, Paul Livingstone, Abhijit Banerjee, Pedro Eustache, Peter Jacobson, Salar Nader, Alam Khan, Sheila Govindarajan, Maiya Sykes and Mirror Talk. Aside from maintaining a high profile as one of the most in demand live and studio musicians in Los Angeles, Lewis also brings music to the big screen as a composer, where his works range from commercials to films. Whether creating lush soundscapes or thunderous drums, Lewisbrings breathtaking emotion to his creative works.
