Seven Large Ensembles: The Variety of Berlin Big Bands.

Born in 1937, the multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel is a pioneer of free jazz in Germany. Unlike many of his companions, he has no reservations about younger musicians and loves cross-cutting projects, such as the connection between hip-hop and improvised music. Tireless as Hampel is, he is on stage for his 80th birthday on 31 August and is celebrating his work with four exceptional dancers and singer Cavana Lee-Hampel. To celebrate the event, he chose the Omniversal Earkestra, the only big band in the city to play every Monday, in honor of the African jazz mystic and composer Sun Ra. The tenor saxophonist Johannes Schleichermacher and the percussionist Bernd Oezsevim, who had already made Hampel a contestant of his trio at the end of the 1990s, were specially appointed for this occasion. In addition, some of the most interesting young musicians of Berlin are gathered in the Earkestra, while the ceremonial master, Ingo, will complete the program with the compositions of Hampel.
