In honor of the centennial of Ella Fitzgerald, the “First Lady of Song,” Dee Dee Bridgewater performs timeless songs associated with legendary singer, revisiting the arrangements penned by Lou Levy, Slide Hampton, Cecil Bridgewater and John Clayton for her star-studded 1997 Verve release Dear Ella. A heartfelt salute to Fitzgerald—an enormous influence who had passed the previous year—the album is a lush, large-ensemble session that boasted a lineup featuring veteran jazz giants Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Ray Brown, and Grady Tate as well as the emerging generation of jazz masters including Antonio Hart and Teodross Avery.

About Dee Dee Bridgewater

Since she first gained recognition in the early 1970s with the great Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Bridgewater has thrived wherever she’s landed, from Broadway, where she earned a Tony Award for her work in the original production of The Wiz, to Paris, where she spent more than a decade as France’s greatest champion of jazz. After moving back to the US in 1999 Bridgewater quickly regained visibility at home with a series of brilliant albums, while also hosting NPR’s syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater.
