This night celebrates the release of Dee Dee Bridgewater’s new Okeh Records album devoted to the music and spirit of her hometown, Memphis… Yes, I’m Ready. Steeped in civil rights history and one of the great hotbeds of American music, the city locals call “Soulsville” has a very special, highly personal place in Bridgewater’s heart. She performs the soul, blues and R&B she heard when her father, trumpeter Matthew Garrett, was a DJ on WDIA radio including classics by B.B. King, Otis Redding, B.B. King, and Bobby Blue Bland. Recorded at Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell’s historic Royal Studios, Memphis… Yes, I’m Ready was co-produced by GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum.
About Dee Dee Bridgewater
Since she first gained recognition in the early 1970s with the great Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Bridgewater has thrived wherever she’s landed, from Broadway, where she earned a Tony Award for her work in the original production of The Wiz, to Paris, where she spent more than a decade as France’s greatest champion of jazz. After moving back to the US in 1999 Bridgewater quickly regained visibility at home with a series of brilliant albums, while also hosting NPR’s syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater.
