Ace Hotel and Swim Club presents:

A cosmic light-sound installation inspired by the Siren’s song in Homer’s Odyssey.

“At sea once more we had to pass the Sirens, whose sweet singing lures sailors to their doom. I had stopped up the ears of my crew with wax, and I alone listened while lashed to the mast, powerless to steer toward shipwreck.”
— Homer’s The Odyssey

In Homer’s time, the stars were our guides. The Sirens is a performance based in Asteroseismology, the science of oscillations in stars. A custom built telescope will rotate through the night sky, converting light waves into audible frequencies. The sounds of celestial bodies can be alluring, dissonant, eerie, jarring, and uplifting.

The Sirens creator Kyle Simon studied the physics of acoustics, he lives and works in Joshua Tree, California. Simon’s work is at the intersection of art and science.

The Autumnal Equinox show will begin on our own sunset as the telescope sweeps from east to west. We will then travel to the crescent moon hanging low in the western sky, and finally to Jupiter and four of its largest moons.
