Choreographer Joanna Haigood and her company Zaccho Dance Theatre present The View From Here, a remounting of Haigood’s 2002 work inspired by the paintings of Marc Chagall.

The View From Here is a live performance event that draws the audience into the world of Chagall’s work, focusing on specific paintings for their exploration of themes of circus, love, life in the shtetl, revolution, color and multidimensionality. In keeping with her interest in Chagall’s intersecting frames of reference, Haigood uses layered imagery and aerial dance to evoke dreamlike effects compatible with both Chagall’s technique and sense of fantasy. First presented in 2002, The View From Here current remounting is being developed with several key collaborators: Associate Director Jeff Raz, renowned Circus Clown and Director, brings his expertise to the use of circus arts in the piece; set designer Wayne Campbell has created the stunning scenic design that allow the dancers to work in three dimensions; Allen Willner has created the colorful and evocative lighting design; and Callie Floor has designed the costumes that help bring Chagall’s characters to life.

The View From Here features performances by noted Bay Area dancers Alex Allen, Tristan Cunningham, Calvin Kai Ku, Adonis Martin, Danielle Sandia Sexton, Sonya Smith, and Helen Wicks. Marc Chagall, a Russian-born painter and designer, created a genre virtually his own in the early and mid-Twentieth Century. His lively, highly imaginative renderings of life experiences display a rich, poetic dreamlike sense of fantasy and color. He approaches his subjects with a warm and generous sense of humor, yet also shows a deep concern for the spiritual.

Joanna Haigood co-founded Zaccho Dance Theatre in 1980. She has been honored with many notable awards, among them the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Cal/Alpert Award in Dance, the US Artist Fellowship, a New York Bessie Award, three Isadora Duncan Awards and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. Her work has been commissioned by the Walker Arts Center, Exploratorium Museum, Festival D’Avignon, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Dancing in the Streets, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and the National Black Arts Festival, among others. Additionally, Haigood’s choreography has been in the repertories of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and San Francisco’s Alonzo King Lines Ballet. Haigood has taught at the Center National De Danse Contemporaine and the National École des Arts du Cirque in France, the Laban Centre in England, Spelman College, Stanford University, and the San Francisco Circus Center.
