Join bassist-composer Michael Bisio on the beautiful ACA campus in New Smyrna Beach, Florida from October 15 to November 4, 2017.

Applications are now being accepted for Associate Artists-in-Residence at The Atlantic Center for the Arts.

  • Deadline extended through June 11, 2017.

All instrumentalists, composers, and vocalists are welcome to apply.

Atlantic Center for the Arts is an innovative nonprofit artists-in-residence program that provides artists with an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world’s masters in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Since the program began in 1982, over 3500 artists have been served from the US and around the world.

Residency Goals

  • Working together to create a vocabulary inclusive of spontaneous composition, traditional notation, and gesture.
  • Meeting as individuals and in group settings to realize a music that is relevant to our time at ACA and develops a process that carries beyond.
  • Establishing a collaborative experience with the other disciplines represented.

Michael’s compositions appear on over 25 recordings (entire discography is over 100). He has been awarded nine grants in composition and an Artist Trust Fellowship.

“A veteran of the improvised music scene, it was a treat to hear Bisio in a rare solo concert. Rapidly jump-cutting from idea to idea, frequent clips of Mingus, Ornette and more punctuated an hour of stream-of-conscious freedom, showcasing a verbosity of language that few improvisers have absorbed. Ferocious, angular walking breaking hard-right into delicate flautando chords, then devolving into guttural, bow-grinding chaos, this riveting set was not merely an exploration of the sonic possibilities of the double bass. It was a view into the mind of a very open, sensitive, creative human, and amidst all the thunder and noise, one could never hide from the raw emotion flowing from Bisio like a flood.”
— Jeff Harshbarger, Bass World (Vol. 38 Number Two 2015)

“Bisio is one of the most attentive, intuitive bassists around, qualities that make a good fit with Shipp and make Shipp sound even better. But there’s more to Bisio than being a sideman; he’s a force as a composer and bandleader in his own right.”
