American pianist and composer Matthew Shipp has established himself – thanks to his technical and compositional skills and a deep penchant for experimentation, among many other qualities – as a true jazz icon of the last thirty years. After having played in a variety of group settings and styles, the musician created the Matthew Shipp Trio, a project that best synthesizes those features. With exquisite and extraordinary contributions from double-bass player Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker, the group offers a different and distinctive take within the most classic jazz setting. Having performed extensively at some of the world’s most important venues and festivals and unanimously acclaimed by critics, the trio plays its own and other composers’ pieces with extraordinary skill, where one of the elements for which its leader is best known since his beginnings is brilliantly at play: improvisation.
