Reasons for Moving

This all-improvised concert at Bird & Beckett by the group “Reasons for Moving” is in preparation for a 2018 tour of Europe starting at the Jazzdor festival in France, and will feature a first meeting of core members Frith/Ochs/Johnston with one of NYC’s most in-demand and creative drummers, Allison Miller.

This will surely be an exciting event not to be missed!! A limited number of seats can be reserved in advance by calling the bookshop Tuesday, January 2nd, until the allotment is exhausted. Some seats will also be available at the door. The cover charge for this show is $20.

This concert will mark a special reunion of the group, featuring guitar iconoclast Fred Frith, ROVA co-founder Larry Ochs, and musical chameleon trumpeter Darren Johnston, this time with New York-based superstar of the drums, Allison Miller. In 2009, Reasons for Moving, then comprised of Frith/Ochs/Johnston with Devon Hoff on bass and Ches Smith on drums, made a critically celebrated recording for Not Two Records, mixing elements of jazz, rock, and art music from around the world.

Bird & Beckett and Reasons for Moving are pleased to acknowledge and express our gratitude to Jazz in The Neighborhood’s “Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund” for its co-sponsorship of this concert. The GFWF will subsidize the musicians’ fees for this engagement, allowing for a guaranteed payout per musician 50% greater than would be possible without their assistance, in a concerted effort to set a new bar for the compensation of the Bay Area’s incredible pool of professional jazz musicians.

Audiences, venues and philanthropists must combine to make this a durable reality for Bay Area’s jazz musicians, and we’re confident that these efforts will be met with great success!

Thanks to Jazz in the Neighborhood and to our wonderful audiences for doing their part!
