Beginning with his live 1971 ECM session Improvisations for Cello and Guitar with English avant-garde guitar icon Derek Bailey, Holland’s duet partners have included a kaleidoscopic tally of master musicians including bassist Barre Phillips, saxophonists Sam Rivers and Steve Coleman, vibraphonist Karl Berger, Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev, Tunisian oud player Dhafer Youssef, and Spanish flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichuela. In a reprise of one of the highlights of Holland’s Season 1 residency, he joins forces with piano great Kenny Barron for a series of expansive instrumental pas de deux, revisiting an enduring and magical partnership that was documented on their celebrated 2014 Impulse! release, The Art of Conversation. Barron is an NEA Jazz Master and ten-time GRAMMY nominee who helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s catapulted him into the spotlight. A series of long running gigs with Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef and Ron Carter have kept him there over the years. Called “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” by the Los Angeles Times, he has recorded nearly 50 albums as a bandleader.

Co-presented: Bass Player, Guitar Player

“Pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have massive chops, and a lot to say, so their new duet album, The Art of Conversation, is everything the title suggests.”
– Stereophile

These 10 tracks all showcase the profound mastery of two artists who share an easy rapport and elegantly restrained expressiveness.
