Aditya Prakash was 15 years old when Ravi Shankar assured him that his talent and drive meant that music could be his vocation as well as an abiding passion. Prakash proved the legendary sitar master right. A dynamic collaboration of Indian classical, jazz with a little inspirational hip hop and funk mixed in!

Aditya will be joined by this amazing musician lineup:

  • Julian Le – keyboards
  • Owen Clapp – bass
  • Brijesh Pandya – drums
  • Shiva Ramamurthi – violin
  • Mic Holden – percussion

Aditya Prakash Ensemble seamlessly weaves together Indian ragas and folk melodies with jazz harmonic textures, and interlocks the complexity of Indian rhythmic patterns with hip hop infused beats. The dynamic brass, jazz, and funk sections highlight the powerful Indian classical vocals and violin. Creativity shines forth in their dynamic improvisation, unconventional arrangements and memorable compositions. With a repertoire of original songs that range from meditative chants to energetic dance songs to playful melodies, Aditya Prakash Ensemble is truly a one-of-a-kind musical experience.

He continues to work as a vocalist for hire in an array of settings, but his primary creative outlet is the genre-melding Aditya Prakash Ensemble, a group that grew out of his ethnomusicology studies at UCLA. Encompassing jazz musicians, hip-hop artists, new music performers and fellow Carnatic artists, the group plays its first major Bay Area concert April 19 at Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage.

He’s earned ardent fans among some of his most adventurous colleagues, including Karsh Kale, the innovative Asian underground musician who founded the Tabla Beat Science group.

Aditya represents a new generation of musician,” Kale said in an email. “He has studied his traditional craft extensively but is not afraid to take that language and art form into uncharted territories.
