The Gatherings Concert Series is proud to present Robert Rich and Markus Reuter performing together live.

Robert Rich and Markus Reuter have been friends for over a decade and have released two critically acclaimed albums, On Eleven Questions (2007) and Lift a Feather to the Flood (2017). However, this is the first short tour they are doing together. The concerts are based on the concept of the intimate interaction of piano and guitar, as demonstrated on their “Lift a Feather to the Flood” album from 2017.

Robert Rich

Across four decades and over 40 albums, Robert Rich has helped define the genres of ambient music, dark-ambient, tribal and trance, yet his music remains hard to categorize. Part of his unique sound comes from using home-made acoustic and electronic instruments, microtonal harmonies, computer-based signal processing, chaotic systems and feedback networks. Robert has performed in caves, cathedrals, planetaria, art galleries and concert halls throughout Europe and North America. His all-night Sleep Concerts, first performed in 1982, became legendary in the San Francisco area. Robert has designed sounds for television and film scores, has written software for composers who work in just intonation, and helped develop the MIDI microtuning specification. As mastering engineer and mixer, he has applied his ear to hundreds of albums in all styles. He has been featured in Keyboard Magazine, Electronic Musician, Guitar Player, Innerviews, and elsewhere worldwide.

Markus Reuter

Markus Reuter is a German multi-disciplinary musician, composer, record producer and instrument designer. His work as recording artist, solo performer and collaborator spans (and frequently fuses) electrophonic loop music, contemporary classical music, progressive and art rock, industrial music, world jazz, jazz fusion, pop songs and pure improvisation. Over the course of a two-decade career, Markus has been a member of multiple bands, ensembles and projects (including centrozoon, Stick Men (Official), Tuner, The Crimson ProjeKct and Europa String Choir) as well as a solo artist. Since 2011 he has begun to establish himself as a contemporary classical composer, starting with the performance and recording of his large-scale orchestral piece Todmorden 513. A specialist in touch guitar playing, Markus became known as a leading player of the Warr Guitar and Chapman Stick during the 1990s and 2000s before developing and marketing his own U8 and U10 Touch Guitar instruments. In collaboration with former King Crimson member Trey Gunn, he runs the Touch Guitar Circle, a teaching and support network for touch guitar players.

Tim Motzer

Guitarist/improviser/composer Tim Motzer lives in a technicolor world of music. He is known for his distinct textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. After 20 years of world touring, stunning collaborations, and over 80 albums of credits, this Philadelphia-based guitarist continues to traverse manifold territories in music. In 2016-18, Tim toured the world playing concerts and jazz festivals in Tokyo, London, Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States with Bandit65, an improvising trio he co-leads with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and drummer Gintas Janusonis. He has collaborated with numerous musical luminaries: David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit (of CAN), poet Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Markus Reuter, and Pat Mastelotto among others. In modern dance, Motzer composes and performs live solo scores around the world. He composes for film and video, and is a composer/accompanist for University of the Arts Dance in Philadelphia.

In his solo concerts, Motzer improvises with guitar and electronics creating cinematic landscapes of sound, drones, densities, oblique forms while exploring the unknown. Motzer has performed solo in Tokyo, Seoul, Berlin, Wroclaw, Princeton, Philadelphia, New York, D.C., Toronto, Oujda Morroco, Baltimore, Hackensack, and Galloway among other cities. He has released several solo albums recorded live on various radio broadcasts, and live concerts, including Soak, Unseen Universe, AKA, and Live from Star’s End. Chuck van Zyl from WXPN’s STAR’S END radio show says Motzer’s music “provokes thought and binds genres; it’s about the plasticity of time, and how it may be felt as both infinite and finite, elusive and recognizable.”

Tim Motzer returns to The Gatherings Concert Series on Saturday 19 May 2018 with an opening set for Robert Rich & Markus Reuter.
