In this class (conducted online via Zoom), we will explore systematic ways to increase our expressive potential when vocally improvising in the context of musical forms possessing one or more of the following elements: Chordal progressions, rhythmic ostinato figures, and composed melodic lines. This includes but is not limited to “”jazz standards”” and other familiar song forms.

Throughout, we will stress:

  1. An Ears First approach, wherein we glean as much as we can about a musical form and how we might negotiate it before and/or instead of engaging with any instrument (e.g. a piano).
  2. The importance of listening very closely to the works of great improvisers, using what they provide for both inspiration and detailed information.

Lorin Benedict is a creative improvisational singer living in Oakland, CA. He co-leads several groups of improvisers, each of which is dedicated to playing highly structured music in a manifestly loose and playful way. These include the Holly Martins, a trio with alto saxophonist Kasey Knudsen and guitarist Eric Vogler, and Passwords, a duo with drummer Sam Ospovat. In addition, Lorin has worked in groups led by noted Bay Area instrumentalists Howard Wiley, John Schott, and most recently Sheldon Brown.
