Scott and André present music at Bird and Beckett Books in San Francisco that will explore the boundaries of jazz. Both draw inspiration by a tradition brought to us by luminaries Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, and many more.

Scott R. Looney studied composition and improvisation with Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Morton Subotnick, and Frederic Rzewski, obtaining his MFA in Composition from California Institute of the Arts. He has forged a signature style using the inside and outside of the piano, plucking strings, using metal implements and other quick preparations, in combination to playing the piano normally.

Scott has recorded and/or performed with a growing list of world class improvisers: Oliver Lake, Frank Gratkowski, Wolfgang Fuchs, Jon Raskin (of the ROVA Saxophone Quartet), Joelle Leandre, Henry Kaiser, Gianni Gebbia, Gino Robair, Joe Morris, Marco Eneidi, Jeb Bishop, and Paul Smoke. He has played in numerous west coast festivals such as the Olympia Experimental Festival, Big Sur Experimental Music Fest, Line Space Line Festival in LA, and the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival. He recently toured Israel and Germany w/ saxophonist Ariel Shibolet and bassist Damon Smith.

André Custodio began percussion studies at age 11 in the early 80’s with Timbalero Karl Perazzo (Santana). Perazzo helped André land his first pro-gig on nationally syndicated television on SF KRON 4’s ‘Just Kidding’. He studied drums privately with Bob Danielson (Beach Blanket Babylon) and Mat Marucci (John Tchicai), and has toured internationally with punk band Say Bok Gwai and in some of these United States with singer/songwriter Terese Taylor.

Custodio has performed on jazz casuals, rock and roll cover bands, music event production firms, and with independent singer-songwriters. He’s worked with the North American British American Business Council, San Francisco British Consulate, California Life Sciences Foundation, Non-Stop Productions, Impact Fund, and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

André’s jazz quartet Consensual Bop play regularly for many types of events (Including an appearance last year at Bird and Beckett Books!).

Bird and Beckett’s weekly “jazz in the bookshop” series is the cornerstone of it’s live music programming, They’ve never skipped a Friday since October of 2002. Rich or poor or in between, many exhibit that philanthropic attitude that help us make this work!
