The Moment at the Beverly presents

Michael Bisio, bassist/composer, has eighty-five recordings in his discography, twenty-four of these are split evenly between leader/co-leader, ten of them document his extraordinary association with modern piano icon Matthew Shipp. Michael has been called a poet, a wonder and one of the most virtuosic and imaginative performers on the double bass. Nate Chinen in the New York Times writes: “The physicality of Mr. Bisio’s bass playing puts him in touch with numerous predecessors in the avant garde, but his expressive touch is distinctive;…”

The fleet-fingered and pitch-perfect Bisio ends the piece with an absolutely jaw-dropping solo.

Iva Bittová was born in 1958 in Bruntál in northern Moravia in what was then Czechoslovakia – and nowadays the Czech Republic. Both of her parents were musicians. Her mother Ludmila was a pre-school teacher who spent most of her life with her family; her father Koloman Bitto – Bittová is the surname’s female form – was a musician strongly influenced by the land of his birth – southern Slovakia. His main instruments were string bass, cimbalom, guitar, and trumpet. This exceptional ability to play almost any instrument he laid his hands on, whether performing in classical or folk music styles, proved a major influence on his three daughters as they grew up. Both of Iva’s sisters – her older sister Ida and her younger sister Regina – are professional drama and music performers.

Iva Bittová is an extraordinary artist. Raw and refined, passionate and contained, she has the soul of a gypsy, the voice of a troubadour, and the mind of a genius.

In a uniquely satisfying musical synthesis, singer/composer Timothy Hill weaves a natural purity of voice with threads of otherworldly abstract sound, blending seamlessly into a style that defies description. Having performed with such diverse artists as John Cage, Bill Frisell, Jeff Buckley, Allen Ginsberg, Odetta, Pete Seeger, Pauline Oliveros, Iva Bittova, Madan Gopal Singh, and Brooklyn Raga Massive, it is no wonder that Hill’s musical explorations span the genres of folk, jazz, world music, contemporary classical and improvisation. As a member of David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir, he was a pioneer in the art of harmonic singing, prompting The New York Times critic Robert Palmer to praise Hill as “a virtuoso of the Tibetan chanting technique.”

Hill is known for weaving a natural purity of voice with threads of otherworldly abstract sound, seamlessly blending into a style that defies description.

Nancy Ostrovsky was born in North Africa and lived in various countries in Asia. Her early influences in Asia permeate her work in a way that is uniquely original. Her paintings reflect some of the reflections of growing up in different Asian countries particularly Taiwan, the Philippines and Bangladesh. Living in these countries, left images and reflections about universal themes of human aloneness and human interactions that take place everywhere and in all cultures.

Nancy Ostrovsky is a pioneer of performance painting, an art form that has not yet been embraced by galleries and museums but has earned her a dedicated following nonetheless.
