As animation in the US hit the big time led by Disney and Pixar features, in the UK the animation scene was lifted by the rising tide. Aardman became a household name, while at the other end of the spectrum experimental animation was nurtured through Animate!, Channel 4’s co-production scheme with the Arts Council of Great Britain. Artists moved nimbly between independent, experimental and commercial projects, and this program shows the range of their work, which also managed to remain uniquely British. Curated by Irene Kotlarz.

Irene Kotlarz is an animation curator, producer, and former festival director. She was Founding Director of Platform International Animation Festival, and before that was Director of Cardiff International Animation Festival in the UK. She has curated and produced programs on animation for Channel 4, the BBC and MTV, and most recently was Animation Producer on the Annie and Emmy Award winning He Named Me Malala. She currently teaches at CalArts.

GLAS Animation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2014. Our core mission is to cultivate and promote the art and science of animation. We provide a unique platform for independent animation, champion diverse and underrepresented voices, and emphasize exceptional directors and artists that push visual, conceptual, and narrative boundaries within the cinematic artform. We are a community-driven organization that not only exhibits animated films, but creates a context and language for a shared understanding and appreciation of animation in the United States.
