Ali Kaaf is a Syrian multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Berlin.

Kaaf will be giving an artist talk about his ongoing project Byzantinische Ecke (The Byzantine Corner), which deals with memory and recollection of his upbringing in Syria. Inspired by a recent trip to Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, Kaaf was drawn by the spectacle of ornaments dating back to the Byzantium era, where the corners both serve an architectural function and offer an expedition into the depths of intimacy and memory.

“After taking various photographs of these corners, I was urged to re-explore print making techniques through a new lens. Are we able to reconstruct a certain space through fragments of still photographs? It is a process that deals with composition as much as decomposition and fragmentation. A paradox that perhaps echos, or lend meaning to our memory in relationship to time and space.” Kaaf will walk us through his process of combining printmaking techniques with drawing and painting to construct a new instillation in a given space. A metaphor to one’s biography and memory, where time and space are recreated through fragments and scenes.
