For our July Canessa concert we are excited to present Hudson Valley, NY’s Bill Brovold in a trio with Kurt Zimmerman, and Mark Ormerod. Bill is an instrument inventor, guitarist and woodworker and has a new album of collaborative pieces on Public Eyesore called Michael Goldberg Variations. Also on the bill are Thingamajigs Performance Group featuring new music performed on invented as well as traditional instrumentation. Peter Whitehead’s performs instrumental folk pieces using instruments of his own design and Foreignfire is David Katz’ frenetic vocal improvisations.
Bill Brovold is an educator, artist and music maker. From home made instruments, to cowboy music and occasionally taking a stab at classical and noise (both quiet and loud), all styles are open season to Bill Brovold. He has played with Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca, Jamie Saft and Ron Ashton, as well as leading the Detroit-based post-rock outfit, Larval. Bill has released records on Knitting Factory, Tzadik, RareNoise and Cuneiform. He grew up in Enumclaw, where his first musical instrument was a chainsaw.
Bill will be performing alongside some of his longtime collaborators: violinist, Kurt Zimmerman, and guitar/electronics artist, Mark Ormerod.
Thingamajigs Performance Group is a sound-based ensemble working co-creatively in a variety of mediums and with a wide array of local and international artists. Formed in 2008 from longtime Thingamajigs contributors, TPG continues to break new ground in performance fields such as durational performance, alternate tuning, group and open compositional formats, inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural collaboration, and site-work.

Since 2009 foreignfire has been offering voice centered works that mess around in the relational field from clandestine social experiment to conventional public performance.
Described by Ha’aretz as “an uber performer,” David Katz grew up in Tel Aviv, where he fronted legendary underground band The Fluorescents. Based in San Francisco since 2000, David’s regular performances in the United States, Israel and Europe range from free improvisation to idioms as varied as German Lieder, Jewish liturgy, and American pop. Recent appearances include Xavier Veilhan’s Studio Venezia (2017 Venice Biennale), Brett Carson’s Mysterious Descent (Center for New Music SF), Naomi Rincon Gallardo’s Formaldehyde Trip (SFMOMA, The Broad LA) and Tectonics Festival (Tel Aviv)
Sam Genovese holds an MFA in Electronic Music from Mills College in Oakland, CA where he received the Margaret Lyon Music Student Prize for outstanding achievement in music. He releases albums and creates works in video, installation and sound art. His films have screened or been finalists at World-Fest Houston, USA Film Festival, Johns Hopkins Film Festival, and others. Sam performed act one of his one-man opera ENTANGLEMENTING in April 2016 and is currently writing the libretto and composing music for the remaining two acts.
Peter Whitehead is an instrument builder, songwriter, composer and visual artist, who works with both acoustic and electronic instruments. His instruments are often based on folk instruments from around the world, and feature unusual or found materials in place of traditional ones, (e.g. a banjo made from a metal pan). They have appeared in exhibitions at The Center for New Music San Francisco (‘13), Gallery 66 (‘12), The Oakland Museum (‘97), The L.A. Municipal Museum of Art (‘97) the Vancouver Museum (‘98) and The Yerba Buena Center For The Arts San Francisco (‘99) and the ODC Theater Gallery (‘00).
