Come celebrate with us at the 37th annual Carnaval San Francisco, a FREE 2–day family festival in San Francisco’s Mission District over Memorial Day weekend — on Harrison Street between 16th and 24th Streets — and experience global cuisine, international music, dance, arts & crafts, and other fun activities and entertainment on every street corner for the entire family to enjoy. Carnaval San Francisco is the largest multi–cultural celebration on the West Coast, with over 400,000 visitors yearly.

2015 Festival Theme: Agua Sagrada / Sacred Water
Agua sagrada is Spanish for “sacred water.” It symbolizes the universal reverence for the most basic element of life.
Without water, animals and plants would not exist. Seventy-one percent of Earth’s surface is water. It hydrates every cell of all living creatures. In fact, fifty percent or more of the human body is comprised of water — for men the amount is sixty percent, women’s bodies are fifty-five percent water. Additionally, our daily lives are dependent on this precious, natural resource to drink, cook, grow food, keep livestock alive, cleanse and purify us. Scientists believe that the earliest living microbes may have formed as long as 3.5 billion years ago in the water and gases of the newborn Earth. From this “primordial soup” came the origins of life on our planet.
Fast forward to today, and Californians find our most basic resource in short supply. In January 2014, Governor Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency for the state of California. This year is expected to be the driest on record.
One NASA scientist predicts that the state has only one year of water supply left in its reservoirs. Groundwater and snowpack levels are at an all-time low which point to the dire outlook for a prolonged drought, says Jay Famiglietti of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
