“One of the premier musicians of his generation” (DownBeat), bassist Christian McBride is widely regarded as the standard-bearer for jazz bassists in the 21st century, and is among the most recorded artists in modern music. He returns with his heralded Big Band for this special night.
The invaluable linchpin of various all-star conglomerations, McBride has appeared on over 300 albums with many of the most illustrious figures in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson and Pat Metheny, while collaborating with artists from across the musical spectrum like Kathleen Battle, Sting, and Questlove of The Roots. A former SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, he’s led a procession of diverse groups since the mid-90s, but until 2011’s The Good Feeling, McBride had never recorded an album with his own big band. Featuring a cast of New York’s best sidemen, the swaggering, hard-swinging session won the GRAMMY Award for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album, and McBride revisited the jazz orchestra format in 2017 for the GRAMMY-winning follow-up, Bringin’ It.
The deep, dark-maple tone that Christian McBride elicits from an upright bass is one of jazz’s forthright pleasures.
