Coming up as a teen through the Duke Ellington Orchestra, later a member of Art Blakey’s vaunted Jazz Messengers, and serving a memorable five-year stint with the iconic Miles Davis, Kenny Garrett is “one of the most admired alto saxophonists in jazz after Charlie Parker” (The New York Times). The Detroit native began his career as a leader with 1984’s all-star Introducing Kenny Garrett, and his subsequent releases established him as a masterful composer, with standout sessions including 1990’s African Exchange Student, 1997’s Songbook, 2003’s Standard of Language, and the expansive, GRAMMY-nominated 2006 release Beyond the Wall. For this performance filmed in June 2019 he is joined by a fierce young quintet including pianist Vernell Brown, Jr., bassist Corcoran Holt, drummer Samuel Laviso, and percussionist Rudy Bird.

The coronavirus separates us, threatening the fabric of community – but music connects, which is why we’ve launched Fridays at Five. It’s what we need right now: a new series of weekly pre-recorded concerts that aspire to connect you – to music, to musicians, to the warm and unique feeling of experiencing live music at the SFJAZZ Center.
For just $5 a month ($60 annually), you can become a Digital Member and tune in each Friday at 5 PM (PT) for the latest concert. Make it a regular date. Bring a glass of wine and cozy up – we think you will discover that digital technology can reveal new dimensions of musical performance. Fridays at Five is not your typical video concert series; it is designed to take you inside the music.
