ONLINE BROADCAST (Originally Recorded MAR 18, 2016)
The Boston Globe called Red Baraat’s irresistible sound “new-breed marching-band music that’s part Punjabi wedding, part New Orleans second line, and all New York.” That’s a perfect summation of this performance by the SFJAZZ favorite, filmed in March 2016 during Season 4. Led by the charismatic Sunny Jain, the hot Brooklyn octet whips up a raucously fun mix of Indian bhangra rhythms, go-go music, jazz, hip-hop and Crescent City brass funk. It’s a Big Apple crew that “looks to South Asia,” says the The New York Times, “pumping out Bollywood tunes and Sufi songs with a crackling beat and the muscle of horns blasting in unison, putting some New York bluster atop faraway roots.” They performed at SFJAZZ in support of their then-recent release, Gaadi of Truth, and have returned numerous times, most recently in special performances called “Festival of Colors” in observance of the Hindu holiday Holi.
