“One of the 21st century’s finest jazz improvisers” (The Guardian), saxophonist Joshua Redman has been stirring audiences around the world with his passionate and thoughtful playing since 1993, when his self-titled debut album on Warner Bros. made him a star. After recent work with Still Dreaming, his GRAMMY-nominated tribute project to his father Dewey Redman and his Ornette Coleman alumni band Old and New Dreams, Redman returns with his latest trio featuring longtime collaborator Reuben Rogers on bass and drumming phenomenon Marcus Gilmore.

A fluent, deeply communicative soloist, composer and winner of the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Redman has led a series of dynamic bands playing his original music and the work of Ornette Coleman, Rogers & Hammerstein and Bob Dylan. He is a former SFJAZZ Guest Artistic Director and co-founder of the SFJAZZ Collective who first performed with us during the second Jazz in the City festival in 1984 while still a student at Berkeley High School. He has played a crucial role in the organization’s development over the years and has brought every major new project to our stages, from his quartet, the Elastic Band, Yaya3, and James Farm to a solo performance in the sacred space of Grace Cathedral and our weeklong tribute to the legacy of Wayne Shorter in January 2019.
