MORE INFORMATION

Join us for an afternoon gallery talk with Kala Media Arts Fellows Sarah Klein and David Kwan and Kala Fellowship Artist Rachel Livedalen.

Sarah Klein is a visual artist working in animation and printmaking. She employs drawing, paper cutouts and live-action footage to create narrative and abstract pieces. Informed by a decade of working in stop-motion, she continues to expand on the language of movement within print-based works. Using image sequences and repeated forms, she creates compositions that highlight the parts that make up the whole. She has presented at the Southern Exposure, Mill Valley Film Festival and Headlands Center for the Arts in the San Francisco Bay Area; Anthology Film Archives and Transmitter Gallery in New York; Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit; Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb; Festival Tweetakt in Utrecht; General Public in Berlin. She is the co-owner and illustrator of The Local Foods Wheel. She curates the Peephole Cinema in San Francisco, and she is the founder and co-producer of the Stop & Go animation series.

David Kwan uses sound, moving image and, most recently, monoprint painting to produce visual musical works for installation, screenings and performance. Adapting sounds and imagery from found and environmental sources, he uses combinatorial and iterative approaches to propel the interplay of light and color in sound and vision over time. He has presented at the Kala Art Institute, Headlands Center for the Arts and Mission 17 in the San Francisco Bay Area; Jack Straw New Media Gallery and 4Culture in Seattle; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions; Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit; Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb; Festival Tweetakt in Utrecht; General Public in Berlin. Based in San Francisco, he has taught art and music at Mills College and produced for local media and radio. He is co-producer of the Stop & Go Animation series.

Rachel Livedalen grew up in Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia. She earned her BA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Virginia. Upon completion of her degree, Rachel was awarded the Aunspaugh Fellowship from the University of Virginia to continue her creative research on campus. In 2014 Rachel graduated with an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa. Rachel Livedalen is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She has held this position since 2014 and heads the printmaking area. Rachel exhibits her interdisciplinary work widely with recent solo exhibitions in Dallas, Tallahassee, and Kansas City. She also recently received a 2017-2018 Kala Fellowship Award from the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA and is currently working on an installation for Eastern State Penitentiary as part of their 2018 Artist Program. Her creative research explores contemporary femininity through the lens of past histories and mythologies.
