With “disciplined artistry and a poet’s gift for illumination” (All Music Guide), bassist Larry Grenadier is among the most respected and in-demand instrumentalists in jazz, a 25-year veteran of pianist Brad Mehldau’s epochal trio, and an artist with a lengthy connection to SFJAZZ. He performs an evening of material from his 2019 ECM solo bass album The Gleaners.

The San Francisco native has come a long way since his 1986 performance as an 18-year-old Stanford freshman in duo with saxophone icon Joe Henderson at the Herbst Theater’s Green Room — an event steeped in SFJAZZ lore. Grenadier began bass studies at 12 after witnessing a performance by Ray Brown, and was playing professionally in the Bay Area at 16, backing Harvey Wainapel, George Cables, Bobby Hutcherson, among others. He met Stan Getz at Stanford, and toured with the saxophone great before relocating to the East Coast for work with Gary Burton. Grenadier began his association with Mehldau in the early 90s, an enduring and symbiotic relationship that has produced 17 albums and innumerable performances by a band arguably described as the greatest working trio in jazz. Grenadier has been an invaluable sideman, lending his lithe and inspired basswork to dozens of recordings and performance with the likes of Pat Metheny, Betty Carter, Joshua Redman, Charles Lloyd, Paul Motian, Chris Potter, and his wife, vocalist Rebecca Martin. With The Gleaners, Grenadier steps out into the rarefied air of solo bass recordings, a gorgeously realized document that, in the words of DownBeat, “offers a pathway into a brilliant mind taking a rare and well-deserved turn in the spotlight.”

His sound is as direct and powerful as it is elegant.
