A two-time Screen Actors Guild Award-winning actor and comedian, Lea DeLaria is perhaps best known for her scene-stealing role as Carrie “Big Boo” Black on Netflix’s wildly popular series Orange is the New Black, and leads a simultaneous career as an accomplished jazz vocalist. Beginning her career as a stand-up comic in San Francisco in the early 1980s, DeLaria brought an uproarious yet deeply personal style that immediately found favor with audiences, and she made history as the first openly gay comic to perform on late night television on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1993.

DeLaria’s most recent release, House of David, is a loving tribute to the late David Bowie.

She’s led a whirlwind career, appearing on Broadway in the revivals of On the Town and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, on television in Californication and the daytime drama One Life to Live, and in the movies The First Wives Club and Disney/Pixar’s 2017 smash Cars 3. During it all, DeLaria has maintained a steadfast devotion to jazz, instilled from a young age by her jazz pianist father. Her 2001 Warner Brothers debut album, Play it Cool, was an assured statement of purpose featuring a first-rate band including Brad Mehldau, Larry Goldings, and Gil Goldstein. DeLaria’s most recent release, House of David, is a loving tribute to the late David Bowie featuring her smoky, swinging takes on Bowie classics including “Space Oddity” and “Rebel Rebel,” and “Fame,” among others.

An ingenuity that conjures fresh melodies out of any tune.
– THE GUARDIAN
