Michael O’Neill started on clarinet at an early age, spurred along by his neighbor, the great jazz and studio drummer, saxophonist, and clarinetist, John Guerin who helped Michael with his first band in Junior High School. Eventually, he did a stint in the Air Force Band and then played in local clubs by night to support his studies by day, in composition and arranging as well as jazz performance. Although, he began playing music professionally for financial and recreational reasons in his off hours, after a couple of years of graduate school he dedicated himself to a full-time career in music, going deeply into composition and forming groups to perform his original material, a habit that’s never abated. Michael now leads several jazz groups in the Bay Area.
