FREE ADMISSION | SF Bay Area Premiere

  • Larry Ochs – saxophones
  • Darren Johnston – trumpet
  • Dave Rempis – alto saxophone
  • Madalyn Merkey – electronics
  • Tim Perkis – electronics

Chicago free-jazz stalwart Dave Rempis flies into the Bay Area to add his alto sax’s brilliance to the musical firmament first created by the other four musicians this past September when electronics wizards Madalyn Merkey and Tim Perkis met up with wind player Larry Ochs and Darren Johnston for the first and only time — so far. Serious listening and unregulated response to that listening were the starting point for that first concert blow-out; that will be the starting place again for this quintet show on December 12.

Rempis, Ochs and Johnston comprise the long-standing improvising trio Spectral. That trio’s musical ESP in concert is legendary in the improvised music world. (This acoustic trio Spectral performs as a trio in Berkeley on December 13.)

This quintet should be equally revelatory, if the September 2019 quartet show is any indication of how high the music can go! So if you’re anywhere near Palo Alto, please come by, for your listening pleasure.

And please thank Earthwise, the organization sponsoring this special opportunity for the musicians to hook up and for gifting you all in for free. (Reservations are not required but are preferred by Earthwise.)

Hoping to help start a scene in Palo Alto. Please pass the word on to friends in that area or in San Francisco.
