The hugely influential, GRAMMY-winning drummer and composer performs material from his highly regarded ECM albums of the 1990s, re-interpretations of timeless standards, and music from his new quartet release. Perhaps best known for his career with the landmark fusion groups Weather Report and Steps Ahead, the New Jersey-born Erskine is, simply, one of the most versatile and recorded instrumentalists in modern music.

Cutting his teeth at 18 with progressive big band giant Stan Kenton, Erskine attained international attention when, at the suggestion of bass legend Jaco Pastorius, he joined Weather Report, recording five albums with Joe Zawinul’s electric juggernaut including the GRAMMY-winning 1979 live date 8:30. Since then, Erskine has made indelible marks on fusion, straight ahead jazz, experimental music and mainstream pop, appearing on over 500 albums with artists ranging from Diana Krall and Joe Henderson to Steely Dan and Kate Bush, and winning two GRAMMY Awards – a testament to a master craftsman who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of artistic excellence. He has led 22 individual albums as a leader, including four sublime ECM sessions in the 1990s featuring his trio with pianist John Taylor and bassist Palle Danielsson – material Erskine will revisit with his current quartet of saxophonist George Garzone, pianist Alan Pasqua, and bassist Darek Oles along with compositions from the quartet’s new Fuzzy Music session, Three Nights in L.A.

Though he’s known for percussive bombast, Erskine also played on a fair amount of ECM recordings, where low dynamics and use of space was crucial.
