Philip Glass performs works for piano, both solo and in duets with a cross-section of notable guest pianists culled from the worlds of classical music and jazz. After nearly two decades of recordings and performances documenting his compositions for small ensemble, opera, symphony and film, Glass finally issued a solo piano recording of his own work, Solo Piano, in 1989. Since then, much of Glass’s music has become part of the contemporary solo piano repertoire. Russian pianist and composer Anton Batagov, Taiwanese keyboardist Jenny Lin, and jazz pianist Aaron Diehl are among the artists who have embraced it and made it their own.

A musician heavily influenced by Glass and his fellow “minimalist” composers of the 1960s-70s, Batagov has composed and recorded prolifically and is seen as one of the younger generation of artists carrying on the approaches and aesthetics Glass pioneered. He has recorded two albums dedicated to Glass’s music, including 2016’s Prophecies and last year’s Philip Glass: The Complete Etudes.

Starting her musical life as a true prodigy, Lin began piano studies at age four and has given recitals at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. A versatile artist who has moved within the realms of the classical repertoire, contemporary music, and jazz, Lin has collaborated with Ethan Iverson, Marc Ribot, Nels Cline, and Uri Caine. She recorded an album devoted to Glass’s Etudes, Complete Etudes for Piano, for the Steinway & Sons label in 2017.

Known primarily as a major voice in jazz piano who frequently shares the stage with vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, Diehl is one of the younger generation of omnivorous artists whose scope extends beyond genres and borders. He brings a uniquely personal approach to the music of Philip Glass.

PHILIP GLASS

Easily one of the most prolific and influential artists of the modern age, Philip Glass rose to prominence as one of the so-called “minimalist” composers in the late 1960s along with Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and LaMonte Young. His seminal long-form composition Music in 12 Parts, revolutionary electric chamber opera Einstein on the Beach, and score to Godfrey Reggio’s groundbreaking 1983 film Koyaanisqatsi brought his singular approach to the mainstream. Glass’ current work encompasses solo piano, symphonic music, chamber music, opera, and soundtracks.

ANTON BATAGOV

Anton Batagov is a Russian composer and pianist. He is one of the most influential Russian musicians of our time. As a performer, Batagov introduced the music of John Cage, Morton Feldman, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass to Russian audiences. His debut CD, a 160-minute recording of Olivier Messiaen’s “Vingt regards sur l’Enfant Jesus”(1990), became a major sensation. Three years later Richard Kostelanetz characterized his 1993 recording of Bach’s “The Art of the Fugue” as, “the most stunning interpretation of Bach since Glenn Gould.”

AARON DIEHL

A 32-year-old classically trained pianist and composer, Aaron Diehl has made an indelible mark on the jazz world over the last 15 years. While showing a rare affinity for early jazz and mid-20th century “third-stream” music, his latest evolution comes as he begins to tackle modern classical works. Having performed Gershwin with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic in the last year, he is also performing the piano works of Philip Glass in numerous locales, both in the U.S. and abroad.

JENNY LIN

Jenny Lin is one of the most respected young pianists today, admired for her adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence. She has been acclaimed for her “remarkable technical command and a gift for melodic flow,” by The New York Times. The Washington Post praises “Lin’s confident fingers… spectacular technique… surely one of the most interesting pianists in America right now…” and Gramophone Magazine has hailed her as, “an exceptionally sensitive pianist.” Her orchestral engagements have included the American Symphony Orchestra, NDR and SWR German Radio orchestras, and Orchestra Sinfonica Nationale della RAI. Her concerts have taken her to Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Kennedy Center, MoMA, and National Gallery of Art, appearing at Festivals such as Mostly Mozart, BAM’s Next Wave, Spoleto/USA, Kings Place London, Chopin Festival Austria, and Schleswig-Holstein Festival Germany.

An influential figure in contemporary classical music for some 40 years.
