Weston Teruya (AIR ’22) creates sculpture, video, and drawing-independently and in collaboration with others-that examine the social dynamics and histories of specific sites and communities. Past projects have featured paper replications of mundane objects, many with ties to Hawaiian or Asian-Pacific Islander cultural practices or to narratives of displacement.

In the Project Space, Weston will be embarking on a new body of work exploring islands, and the ocean and air between them. Drawing on readings, film, archival research, material experimentation, and his own family history, Teruya proposes islands-in history and speculative fiction-as sites of anti-imperial resistance, cross-cultural traffic, environmental richness and tumult, and bearers of embedded and living memory.
