Rich Halley’s Terra Incognita

Longtime Portland, Oregon based saxophonist/composer/improviser Rich Halley celebrates the release of Terra Incognita featuring a quartet with Matthew Shipp, Michael Bisio, and Newman Taylor Baker. This is Halley’s first recording in years featuring a pianist, recorded in Brooklyn in August 2018.

Over the last few decades Rich Halley has released 22 critically acclaimed recordings as a leader and has recorded over one hundred original compositions. He has performed with Matthew Shipp, Tony Malaby, Julius Hemphill, Vinny Golia, Bobby Bradford, Nels Cline, Obo Addy, Andrew Hill, and Oliver Lake. For the last 26 years he has been the artistic director of the Penofin Jazz Festival, a small festival in Northern California that has presented many of the leading figures in creative jazz. Rich was a founder of Oregon’s Creative Music Guild. He was educated as a field biologist, and his lifelong interest in nature has informed his music and led him on many trips into wilderness regions around the world.
