A jazz guitar master and a Bay Area music treasure, Rick Vandivier is known widely for his eponymous ensemble Vandivier and Primary Colors, his duo project with vocalist Nate Pruitt. Active in the Bay Area scene for over 35 years, the guitarist has worked with John Handy, Dr. Lonnie Smith, More Allison, and 2021 NEA Jazz Master Albert “Tootie” Heath.

Best known as part of Marcus Shelby’s Jazz Orchestra and a creative force on the Bay Area jazz scene for the past fifteen years, pianist Adam Shulman is a San Francisco native who soaked up bandstand wisdom from the late, beloved piano master Smith Dobson and work with Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenón, Luciana Souza, Paula West, Larry Coryell, Mark Murphy, and Bobby Hutcherson. He is well known to SFJAZZ audiences for his many holiday performances of Vince Guaraldi’s soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas.

For this night, Vandivier and Shulman honor the legacy of Hammond organ genius Jimmy Smith and his 1963 Blue Note masterpiece Back at the Chicken Shack — a recording the All Music Guide calls “the peak of funky soul jazz that all other challengers of the genre would have to live up to.”

NOTE: Prior to each performance, DJ heyLove will spin a special curated vinyl DJ set that compliments this evening’s music.
