Voss Gallery presents “Prince 2 Queens,” a solo exhibition of autobiographically inspired paintings by Serge Gay, Jr. that depict the immigrant story as an American story of resilience and perseverance.

This is a ‘Coming to America,’ part one of a two part exhibition series about community and immigration. The work is inspired by my family’s history of immigrating to the United States from Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the mid-80s and how we tried to adapt and build a sense of culture and community in Queens, New York. Like immigrant stories in the past–the dream and the search for a better life–I wanted to create a sense of belonging and hope, even when communities are being torn apart. I invite viewers to examine and experience the immigrant story, as the American story in a new light and through my own lens. A story of trying to succeed against all odds in a country not designed or built for you.

Serge Gay, Jr. (b. Port-au-Prince, Republic of Haiti, 1984) is a third-generation visual artist and creative designer based in San Francisco, CA. His art infuses inspiration reflective of urban realities from coast to coast. His graphic aesthetic incorporates the grit of New York, the beauty of Miami, the wealth of Detroit, and the freedom of San Francisco. All of these places, in their own way, permeate the evolution of his work. He studied art at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL, and the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. Gay Jr. continues to explore and share his talent with the world through career-oriented and non-profit freelance projects including graphic design, art directing, gallery exhibitions, art installations, and murals throughout the Bay Area.
Voss Gallery is an art gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District established in 2019 by Ashley L. Voss. The gallery features a dynamic exhibition program of work by emerging and mid-career artists in both solo and thematically organized group shows with an emphasis in New Contemporary work with a technical edge. Voss Gallery prides itself for its unique commitment to fostering community and establishing relationships with local artists and young collectors. New exhibitions are presented approximately every three-to-four weeks.
