“(Yemen Blues) could sound like an Arabic pop orchestra accompanying serpentine melodies, or a North African trance group driving a modal riff, only to switch toward jazzy horn and flute solos or hints of chamber music.” — The New York Times

“Quite simply, it’s one of the most exciting bands in world music right now.” — Time Out Chicago

Yemen Blues

  • Ravid Kahalani — vocals, gimbri
  • Itamar Borochov — trumpet
  • Rafi Malkiel — trombone
  • Shanir Blumenkranz — bass, oud
  • Itamar Doari — percussion
  • Rony Iwryn — percussion

The passionate and magnetic Yemeni-born Israeli singer Ravid Kahalani leads a roaring group of improvising brass, string and percussion players making intoxicating music that merges West African rhythms and ancient Jewish Yemeni melodies, mambo and funk. The group has been making huge waves of late, appearing in Paste magazine’s list of 10 International Acts to Watch and performing a captivating, star-making set at globalFEST, the most prestigious world music festival in America. Returning to SFJAZZ after their triumphant sold-out debut last summer, the band is currently completing work with legendary producer and bassist Bill Laswell on Soul of All, the follow-up to their stellar 2011 debut. With members hailing from Israel, Finland, Uruguay and the U.S., Yemen Blues captures myriad global influences, blending them into a highly danceable, soulful and raucous stew.
