Inspired by the concept of a Merce Cunningham “Event,” Sonic Gathering is a structured 30-minute live music and dance performance done weekly on Zoom. Sound, movement, lighting, costume and set design {within zoom this equates with individual apartment spaces/roofs/outdoor spaces/music studios, etc] – all these elements are created and assembled individually and brought together for the first time for each unique iteration of these performances.

Dancer/Choreographer Brandon Collwes appears with a rotating cast of guest performers who embody distinct styles and traditions, and they explore ways of recreating the connectivity of live dance during a time of physical distancing. Some of the material is choreographed ahead of time and performed in unison, some of the material is improvised by the dancers at intervals determined by Collwes, and some is created by the dancers watching and responding to one another and the live music. Each week brings a new and unedited experience to the viewer, one that doesn’t shy away from the limitations of creating dance in the age of quarantine, but instead embraces the medium to create something fresh and original.

The live music is organized by John King, also with a rotating cast of creative musicians who are instructed to create individual time-scores such that each player, within the 30 minute overall duration, is generating sounds for 20 minutes and leaving silences for 10 minutes, organized as they wish – without anyone knowing of the overall plan until the performance happens. This becomes a non-reactive music, a music which coalesces in unplanned ways. They are encouraged to bring ideas and material coming from what they are currently working on. Each iteration then becomes a unique collection, a vibrant gathering of sound.
