Project Description

In celebration of the opening season of the McMurtry Art Building, Aleta Hayes has been awarded a grant from the Stanford Arts Institute to direct a peripatetic, performance installation and architectural promenade, showcasing the splendid spaces of the McMurtry. This inauguration follows successful performances of Being Scene in the Cantor Arts Center and Scene in Action in the Anderson Collection, continuing with Building Scene: Architecture through Dance, Voice & Fashion.

The Space Launch will use dance, movement, vocal music and costume to highlight different areas of the building. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 2015, during daylight hours.

The dynamic McMurtry Building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, inspires a futurist themed dance and vocal performance. Moved by the innovative architectural design that braids theory and practice, we will place dancers and vocalists in the oculus and throughout the building, linking the two strands of art and art history, to reveal rooms, platforms, and vistas that blur the line between interior and exterior spaces.
