Stephan Crump’s Rhombal

Rhombal is arguably the most ambitious cast of New York bassist Stephan Crump. In the conflict between two outstanding winds, a veteran of the New York improviser scene, the tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, and the brilliant young trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, Crump’s musical ideas develop with the utmost precision. The whole thing is supported by an intimate rhythmic coherence of bandleader Crump, since a decade also a permanent member in the trio of pianist Vijay Iyer (and as such a guest at the Jazzinstitut) and Seattle-born drummer and singer Kassa Overall.

Overall was for many years drummer of the band Timelife the pianist Geri Allen, studied with Billy Hart, Elvin Jones and Bill Higgins, among others. He is not only at home in jazz, but has been quite successful as a rapper and producer for some time. Overall represents Tyshawn Sorey, who was in the studio when Rhombal recorded their CD of the same name.

On this recording, the band brings together songs that bassist Crump wrote after the early death of his brother Patrick. Deep and moving, this music comes along – fragile gems, masterful pieces of the transience of life and the hope of those left behind. Delicate, almost breathed brass sounds contrast with the urgent but always clear and transparent playing of the rhythm section. Although the CD was released by PledgeMusic in the US at the end of 2016, Rhombal are now entering Europe for the first time with this program.

At JazzTalk, Stephan Crump and Wolfram Knauer talk about the aesthetics of pain and the collective realization of deep feelings like love, loss and grief in improvised music. The conversation takes place after the break between the two parts of the concert in English.

An event of the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt.
