Transiting is an exhibition of 17 artists addressing time, travel, dislocation and “being in transit” in their work. The works in Transiting mark off the transition from one place (or from one time) to another by considering movement, its eventfulness, and its repercussions – aspects that can have visual manifestations in video, photography, drawing, painting and mixed media sculpture.

The title references philosopher Mario Perniola’s “Transiti” (1980); this idea is addressed as a way of understanding a dynamic philosophical tool for looking at the passageways cut through time and space in one’s everyday existence. Perniola examined the role of images in a wide range of aesthetic and social contexts, finding the notion of transit as a suitable way to capture the cultural aspects of technology that have altered today’s society. The works included don’t function as “illustrations” of this notion, the artists in “Transiting” have cross trajectories with Perniola’s ideas.
