Featuring panelists: Cara Hagan (Movies by Movers, Appalachian State University) and Francesca Penzani (DV8, California Institute of the Arts) for a moderated discussion addressing collaboration in dance outside of the studio and questions of archive and artistry/what it means to record movement for screen. Panel is held in the Art Produce Gallery and will open to audience questions following moderated discussion. Panel is followed by a short screening of recent films from the artists. Wine will be served.

Cara Hagan is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is informed by movement, words, digital space, contemplative practice, and community. Ms. Hagan serves on the dance studies faculty at Appalachian State University, as well as serving as director and curator for ADF’s Movies By Movers, an annual, international dance film festival that hosts events at both the American Dance Festival and Appalachian State University. Cara’s scholarly and creative work can be found in various publications, including the Snapdragon Journal of Art and Healing, Headwaters Journal of Expressive Arts, the International Journal of Screendance, and in the book, Dance’s Duet with the Camera: Motion Pictures, edited by Telory D. Arendell and Ruth Barnes. Currently Cara is under contract to complete her first solo authored book through McFarland Publishing.

Francesca Penzani was born and raised in Bergamo, Italy where she started her theatre studies at Teatro Viaggio and Comuna Baires (Milano). She studied Dance and Choreography at London Contemporary Dance School and at California Institute of the Arts and have been working Independently as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, video maker. Since 1999 Francesca teaches Dance for the Camera and Integrated Media at CalArts. She also taught at CSU Dominguez Hills (2000-2005) and as a guest artist at Wimbledon School of the Arts; NTUA, Taipei, Taiwan; Academie der Bilden Kuenste, Munich, Germany. In 2016 and 2017 Francesca taught Dance and Camera Laboratories/ Workshops in Mexico City, Havana Cuba and twice at RIFF Dance Film Festival in Eina, Norway.

40 NORTH Dance Film Festival aims to bring dance and artistic filmmaking to a broader audience while providing a platform for dance and film artists to share their voices with the world, inspiring movers and filmmakers, alike.

The 4th annual 40 NORTH Dance Film Festival will be held in San Diego, California: September 21-October 6, 2018.
