(X)change is a packed week of performance, drag, photography, film, and critical dialogue not to be missed.

This micro-festival brings together Swiss and local Bay Area artists to intersect performance aesthetics and queer tactics across cultural contexts.

Two short films by three Swiss art-world insurrectionists

  • The Point of Least Resistance | Peter Fischli and David Weiss, 1981

A rat and a bear set out to make a killing in the L.A. art world, though maybe somebody has beaten them to it. This meaningful nonsense from the minds of Swiss high-art pranksters Peter Fischli and David Weiss was the pair’s first film collaboration. Fischli and Weiss went on to make another Rat and Bear adventure, The Right Way (1983), and the equally remarkable The Way Things Go (now screening as part of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s eponymous curatorial project at Yerba Center for the Arts gallery (Feb 13–May 24).

  • Everyone Wants Me It’s My Biggest Downfall | Lukas Beyeler, 2012

“It is the year 20xx. A new illness has begun to spread rapidly around the world, causing humans to malfunction”

Everyone Wants Me It’s My Biggest Downfall is a video piece about the lives of some personalities that are caught up in a self-centered universe of their own. Habits and behavior that seem just like an everyday routine to the protagonist might appear as manic to the spectator. How many of us live a life that they are not meant to follow? And why is mankind so wretched? Let’s celebrate the fall of the year 20XX!
